Benefit for the Olympia Experimental Music Festival

flyer_6.20.08

ADDITIONAL NOTE: Show starts at 8:00 PM sharp

For 14 years, the Olympia Experimental Music Festival has been an amazing asset to the NW experimental music community. This year, Aphonia Recordings will be hosting a benefit show to raise money for this year’s festival (…travel expenses for artists, promotion, venue rental etc.. This stuff isn’t free!). In addition to performances, we will also be holding a raffle & silent auction for awesome prizes donated by NW artists & musicians, including: CD’s, LP’s, reel-to-reels, random audio gear, & one squirrel costume (donated by Red Squirrels).

Please show up the benefit, donate generously, buy raffle tickets, bid on a rad prize or two, & support the festival……It will make you a better person!

A number of Aphonia Recordings folks will be performing at the actual festival in Olympia (ie. Paintings for Animals, Darwinsbitch, & a collaboration between Ben L. Robertson + Gabe Will (violist – Problems)).

Mangled Bohemians Kick Off First Leg of Summer Tour

Portland’s own Mangled Bohemians tours Washington in the next week with Seattle’s Blue Moon being the first stop. If you are not familiar with Mangled Bohemians Michael Mannheimer of the Willamette Weekly puts it this way:

… Mangled Bohemians make guitar music that sounds like it’s coming from outer space. The band’s new LP, At the Edge of Earth, sounds foreign and slightly off-putting until you really listen to it closely and notice all the wobbly details, intersecting guitar lines, and hidden melodies that make it a perfect soundtrack to any late-night comedown.

Since the release of “At the Edge of Earth” [AR036CD] James Lee has been making the circuit around Portland and beyond. His current rounds include the following dates:

June 9th-Seattle,WA-The Blue Moon W/ Below Blackstar and Shot in Minnesota
June 10th-Bellingham,WA-The Cabin Tavern W/ Zach Zinn and Sick Kids XOXO
June 12th-Olympia,WA-The Northern The 17th Annual Olympia Experimental Music Festival W/ Derek M. Johnson, Eric Ostrowski, Forrest Friends and more..

More press snippets below:

“Portlands Mangled Bohemians play a mellow brand of psychedelia that expertly balances languidness and eeriness—think Spacemen 3’s “Call the Doctor.” It can be viewed as a kind of fluid, shivery freak folk that provides an escape valve into another dimension where time and responsibilities aren’t crushing you into urgent activity; you can sense that Mangled Bohemians’ music offers a portal to the infinite.” Dave Segal, The Stranger

“Mangled Bohemians like their sometimes tour mates Jackie O Mother f**ker have elements of experimental music and folk music that don’t really fit into either category.” Ben Meyercord, Crappy Indie Music-The Blog

More confirmed dates:

July 6th – Ella Street Social Club, Portland, OR
August 28th – The Comet, Seattle, WA
September 1st – The Black Forest, Eugene, OR
September 8th – The Soda Bar, San Diego, CA

Podcast #18 – Amy Denio and Aphonia Supergroup

Just a short three weeks ago Amy Denio released her first digital only release on Aphonia Recordings. The release entitled, sub-Rosa, is a soundtrack for a multimedia and dance piece of the same name. Directed by Cheronne Wong at produced at the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center exactly one year ago today, September 18th, 2008. This podcast gives an overview of sub-Rosa’s inspiration and we hope you will listen in for a track from sub-Rosa.

This is also kind of a double header as the second part of this podcast is the recording of our Aphonia Recordings Supergroup. For the Olympia Experimental Music Festival benefit show in June we assembled an all star cast of recording artists from the label including, Derek M. Johnson, The Precambrian, Ph0n0n, KRGA and Gabe Will of Problems. We hope you enjoy.

PAINTINGS FOR ANIMALS

Heavy drones, overtone melodies, and the sound of the land – Paintings for Animals performs with field recordings, bowed metals, mixer feedback, throat singing, vocal blips, clicks and the buzz of electronics. Started 2001, in Seattle by Pearson Wallace-Hoyt, the project is maintained to provide a platform for the proliferation of spiritually charged noise and a revival of ritualized sound. With members dispersing to Bali, Kolozberg, New York and San Francisco, Paintings continues to craft a truly Cascadian music of chants, esoterica and the sounds of urban & natural environments.

PENNY & HER LOWER CASE KINDRED

Penny and Her Lower Case Kindred is a medley of shadow puppets, an adjustable stage, a variety of keyboards and organs, a synth, a loop station, a head mic, vacuums, strobe lights, fake blood, real blood, some drums, internal dialogue exposed… Unicorn: “We began hosting on-stage forums a couple of years ago once we realized that it was unfair to monopolize Penny’s brain.” Cher: “I wouldn’t really call it a forum…more like the sound of 15 minute recesses from the other side of the chain-link fence. Lots of piercing noises and academic purging.”

THE PRECAMBRIAN

Aphonia Recordings’ founders, Ben L. Robertson & Andrew Senna, team up to explore the spectral transfiguration of minute sounds & vocalizations. In concept, The Precambrian is a sequence of interactive synthesis environments, engineered by Robertson using the graphical programming language; Max/MSP. Often drawing from his background in sound design for film & theatre, Senna utilizes a handful of homemade piezoelectric transducers, microphones, & field recordings to interact within each of these unique synthetic environments. The result of this interaction is a performance which resembles a series of absurd, one-act narratives.

Mangled Bohemians

Mangled Bohemians was formed in the fall of 2007 by James Lee and Ryan Shoptaw. By combining psychedelic, folk and experimental textures through space guitars and dark ambient synths. In 2008 the duo was invited to  the 14th annual Olympia Experimental Music Festival where they met Ben Robertson and Andrew Senna of Aphonia Recordings, to which they were  quickly signed. This brought forth their first album “Degeneration” in late 2008 followed by a west coast tour allowing them to join such acts as Tunnels (JOMF), Pocahaunted, Sun Araw, Inca Ore, Date Palms, Molino, LA Lungs, Derek M. Johnson and many more.

Shortly after the tour in 2009 FDH  Records released a split record between Mangled Bohemians and Philadelphia psych legends Lunch With Beardo, and the UK label Reverb Worship re-released “Degeneration” bringing a close to the year. 2010  started again with another tour alongside acts such as The Drug  Purse, Lozen, The Why Because, Psychic Reality, Evan Caminiti (Barn Owl) and many more. The year also saw the band releasing more material in Europe landing songs on compilations in Finlandand Germany, and  releasing another split record with Baseball Camp Nurse on Icky  Recordings.

In the spring Shoptaw decided to leave the band to explore other possibilities, leaving Lee with a difficult task, rebuild the band  or continue solo. With many dates already booked Lee chose to continue performing as Mangled Bohemians by himself. This changed the sound and  dynamic greatly. What once was an Art/Noise group now has become an  ambient, psychedelic singer songwriter act more reminiscent of  Grouper, Kurt Vile or Six Organs of
Admittance. 2011 has seen the release of their 2nd full length record “At the Edge of Earth” and extensive touring throughout the year.

Ben Luca Robertson

Born into the dry, expansive landscapes of Eastern Washington State (specifically, the outskirts of Spokane, WA); ponderosa pine trees, eerie basalt formations, the dusty taste of summer, vacant lots, boomtown decay, unintentional kitsch, & a welcome sense of isolation are relished by the artist & bear more influence on him than anything else. Ben Luca Robertson is a composer, sound artist, microtonalist, luthier, educator, & Aphonia Recordings co-founder. His work addresses an interest in autonomous processes & biological or topographical themes & systems; often by supplanting narrative structure with an emphasis on the physicality of sound, the use of extended durations (i.e. drones), spectral tuning, & musical structures that occupy the cusp between algorithm and improvisation. As an educator, he has taught courses in composition, electro-acoustic music, recording, & experimental instrument design at Eastern Washington University, as well as regional workshops on pyschoacoustics & tuning.

Recently, the majority of Ben’s creative output has been realized through his microtonal chamber group, Dancing for the Flesh. The group is composed of a revolving lineup of musicians & multi-disciplinary collaborators. An important component of this performance model is the use of homemade instruments & software; which Ben designs & constructs for this express purpose. These devices often incorporate found & re-purposed objects (aluminum channeling, metal rods, etc.), electromagnetism, sympathetic resonance, photo-sensors, kinetic interaction, & computer programming (Max/MSP) as a means to actualizing the complex tuning systems he envisions for his pieces. In this sense, Ben’s work pays homage to a long line of experimental luthiers, including Harry Partch, Bart Hopkin, Nicolas Collins, & Yuri Landman.

In addition to exploring the upper reaches of the harmonic series, another purpose of creating these devices & software is to foster new modes of performer interaction. Consequently, the use of visual projections, interactive scores, & algorithm-guided improvisation play a significant role in Dancing For the Flesh performances. Other recent projects have included Long Cycles (2014), a sound & moving image installation with digital artist, Jenny Hyde, as well as collaborations with video artist, Lane V. McCabe. Past performances & commissions have included: the Olympia Experimental Music Festival (2008, 2009, 2014), Pritchard Art Gallery (2012), International Noise Conference (2006, 2010), Eastern Washington University Symphony Orchestra (2011), Magma Festival (2010; collaboration with Bill Horist, Derek M. Johnson, Dylan Carlson), Gallery 1412 (2007-2009), & Object Space (2006-2013).

Upcoming Releases: Mangled Bohemians CD, Derek M. Johnson LP, Phantom of the Opera DVD and a New Compilation!

The first few months of 2011 are going to be exciting for experimental music! We are indoctrinating many new artists and new media into our release schedule, including our first vinyl release and our first DVD/Film release. New to the fold are Rachel Carns, known primarily as an amazing musician, pioneering the Queercore movement in the Western U.S. She is also a graphic designer extraordinaire and post modern Renaissance woman. Derek M. Johnson will also be offering his first ever full length release. Although no stranger to the Aphonia universe by virtue of being the artist most frequently appearing at Aphonia Showcases and sponsored events, Johnson here will offer a full length record for the first time. More on all of this later.

First up, as has been recently announced, is Mangled Bohemians new album At the Edge of Earth currently available for pre-order here. This new venture from James Lee of Portland is a swirling mass of psychedelia, meandering ambient soundscapes and as has been featured as of late in Mangled’s live shows, vocals from Lee.

Also on the way is a brand new series of tracks from Olympia, Washington’s Derek M. Johnson. Mr. Johnson has been cultivating a live performance consisting of hand treated slide mounted film, projected via slide projectors (those who know what it is might get interested in BuyDLP.com) against a melange of acoustic solo cello, looped and destroyed tones, all emanating from Johnson’s cello and massive array of effect pedals. Though Johnson’s live show is abstract and often dark in tone, his new LP (release date forthcoming) is subtly beautiful, timeless and varied. It’s themes cover emotional extremes: beauty, anger, melancholy and rain. It should prove to be a truly exciting release as it will be the first ever vinyl release from Aphonia Recordings. There will a limited first run and we will announce a pre-order sale in the near future.

In addition, is an ensemble piece for the 1925 silent film The Phantom of the Opera. Back in December of 2008 Aphonia Recordings hosted a showcase featuring the ensemble (Rachel Carns, Heather Hall, Daniel Buscher and Derek M. Johnson) at the Gallery 1412 collective in Seattle, Washington’s Central District. The resulting recording and performance was so remarkable that we soon decided to create a DVD release of this live performance. The release has been somewhat delayed but we are now set to release it in the next couple of months. The packaging will include cover and insert designs from Rachel Carns and will be hand assembled by the crack Aphonia Releases & Promotions Lab Team. You can listen to our original podcast previewing the show here – it features portions of the debut performance at the Olympia Film Festival.

Original Show Poster designed by Rachel Carns

And last but not least we will be releasing a sampler compilation that will feature new/unsigned aritsts as well as Aphonia stalwarts Paintings For Animals, KRGA, Desolation Wilderness, Darwinsbitch and much, much more! In fact, it will be so crazy good that you will probably want to buy one for your mom as well.

Aphonia Showcase: Gallery 1412 (26 October – Seattle, WA)

Aphonia Recordings’ debut showcase in Seattle will feature a set of compositions
for voice & electronics by seasoned Seattle-based improviser &
multi-instrumentalist, Amy Denio. Also hailing from Seattle, Kristian Garrard (of
‘Joules’) will be performing an electroacoustic set as KRGA.

From the south-sound, Aphonia Recordings welcomes Derek M. Johnson and Myello.
Derek M. Johnson’s work for cello & electronics has been heard at numerous
experimental/improv festivals, including his active involvement with the Olympia
Experimental Music Festival. Derek’s past collaborations have included work with
Unwound, Old Time Relijun, Le Ton Mite, and many others. Likewise, Myello’s set
will demonstrate no shortage of LFO’s, VCF’s, and other acronymous controlled
voltage devices.

Rounding out the evening will be a performance by ‘the Precambrian’, a
collaborative project featuring label founders Andrew Senna & Ben L. Robertson.
Their performance promises to pair Andrew Senna’s work in narrative sound design with Ben L. Robertson’s obsession with microtonality & interactive
processing algorithms. Contact microphone mayhem & max/msp antics are sure to abound!
